Valley of Happiness

(Dolina szczęścia)

1985   >   comedy

A comedy taking place in a Gothic castle set against the backdrop of the economic crisis of the 80s. The film criticizes and ridicules people’s attitudes and characters. The comical effect is achieved by contrasting contradictory traits of the particular characters.

The holiday facility “Dolina szczęścia” is located in a castle in the mountains. The manager informs a new group of holiday makers about potential inconveniences due to the so-called objective reasons. The guests include: a shy romantic Artur, a boorish Kazik, a divorcee Basia and an earl Wojciechowski. The castle’s mysterious atmosphere creates a superb ambience for searching for the supernatural. Unexpectedly, the manger announces the holidays are over. The staff disappear, yet the guests, despite being hungry and cold, decide to stay in the castle. They discover a beautiful Moon Room. Artur, who been sent to get help, is lost in a snow storm. He comes across a train stuck in a snow drift. He tries to get some food, but the train is full of foreigners. Nobody understands him. He returns to the castle. The castle ghost appears and tells the guests to remain optimistic. The holiday makers organize a ball. Artur falls in love with Julia. In the morning a new group of holiday makers arrives at the castle.
