The screenplay is based on Stefan Żeromski’s novel “Ludzie bezdomni”. A story of a social activist – doctor Judym - committed to fighting poverty and destitution who cares more about helping the sick and suffering than about his own happiness.

Doctor Tomasz Judym finishes medical studies in Paris and returns to Warsaw. He’s well educated, talented and handsome with a bright future ahead of him. However, he has some strong social views, which make him unpopular among wealthy bourgeoisie. His goal is eliminate the source of sickness and penury caused by social injustice. His views are not popular in the doctors’ circles, he leaves Warsaw and starts working in Cisy, a popular holiday destination. Faithful to his ideals, he arranges medical treatment for poor peasants. Joanna, Judym’s acquaintance from Paris stays in Cisy. They start falling for each other. The girl helps the doctor take care of his poor patients. Judym’s activities are frowned upon by the management of the spa, which eventually makes him quit his job. He continues his practice in Silesia, where he’s deeply touched by the poverty and abuse of miners. He fights to create basic medical care. A tragic accident in the mine makes him even more determined to help those in need. Joanna arrives in Silesia. The doctor makes a choice. He rejects her love for the sake of committing himself completely to his work.
