The Past

(Czas przeszły)

1961   >   psychological/ war/ drama

A psychological drama showing two completely different characters of active participants of warfare. The film touches upon a complicated problem of interpreting guilt and its consequences.

A sabotage group under the lead of Filip is preparing to kill a Gestapo soldier – von Steinhagen. The information is leaked to the Germans who arrest Fram, Hugon, Antoni and Rudy. Fram manages to run away whereas the rest are shot to death. One of the victims is Antoni – the traitor. Fram doesn’t know that he was allowed to escape as a part of the plan, which is to lead the Hitler soldiers to Filip. Monika, Fram’s girlfriend takes him to the countryside and she’s to tell Filip what happened. A year later in Warsaw Filip interrogates Fram. It turns out that the underground movement considers him  a traitor. Fram realizes that Monika didn’t tell Filip what had happened. In 1960 a trial of one of the Gestapo soldiers – Weber takes place in the Federal Republic of Germany. Monika convinces Fram to use Weber’s testimony to prove he’s not a traitor. Thanks to his attorney’s skills Weber, who’s guilty of killing many Poles, gets the lightest sentence.
