An interesting story about a writer who has lost his inspiration and for whom the materials for a novel he gets from a late friend are an opportunity to resume writing and put an end to the problems in his personal life.
Wiktor Wiarecki is a mediocre writer and author of a few plays and criminals. He defines himself as “backup” and his subsequent attempts at writing are unsuccessful. He also has problems in his personal life, his wife Irena is going through a psychic trauma and his adult son does not want to have anything to do with his father. An unexpected change of the situation is brought about by the death of his friend – an outstanding writer – Stefan Przewłocki. His wife gives Wiarecki the materials for a novel to be written. In this way the late writer assigned his friend with the task to publish his book. The notes are very personal, which allows to deduce that Przewłocki intended to publish an autobiography. They refer to the last months of World War II, when Przewłocki was a solider of the Home Army. Some soldiers wanted to go on fighting to oppose the communists whereas the rest, including Przewłocki had already had enough of weapons, guerilla fights and continuous hiding. They wanted to reveal themselves and start a new, ordinary life. To manifest their choice they took part in an academy organized to celebrate the victory over Germany organized by the authorities. Anti-communists attacked the academy’s participants, as a result of which many people died. Przewłocki survived, saved by “Chmurny” – a political antagonist. Eventually, it dawns on Wiarecki why the novel has never been completed. “Chmurny” was Stefan’s cousin and he did not want to portray him as a unit’s traitor. Wirecki announces he wants to write a novel about morality. In a sanatorium he finds his wife – Irena and manages to reach an understanding with her.
