Signs on the Road

(Znaki na drodze)

1970   >   action

Grand Prix winner at the Locarno International Film Festival.

Interesting roles of Tadeusz Janczar and Leon Niemczyk.

Adaptation of the novel “Gwiazda sezonu” by Andrzej Twerdochlib, who was also a co-writer of the screenplay.

A contemporary psychological drama, featuring sensational plots. The picture deals with the difficult topic of prisoners re-entering the society. Its simplicity and realism have helped the authors avoid obtrusive didacticism or artificial moralizing.

Having left prison, Andrzej Biel tries to start a new life as a technical manager of a provincial transport base. He defies the omnipresent fraud and thefts, which makes him unpopular among both subordinates as well as superiors. A young dispatcher Jadwiga becomes Biel’s ally and they soon fall in love. The character prevents a theft planned by his friend from the prison cell and, by doing so, he symbolically cuts ties with his past, choosing the life of an honest man.

Due to the topic and the circles in which the film’s action is set “Znaki na drodze” is compared to “Baza ludzi umarłych” by Czesław and Ewa Petelscy.
