Screen Tests

(Zdjęcia próbne /trzy nowele/)

1977   >

An early film by the three directors: Agnieszka Holland, Paweł Kędzierski and Jerzy Domaradzki, an exceptionally coherent work of art despite its  novel structure.

During the ceremony ending the school year Anka, a student who’s taking her final exams, recites a poem. She plans to get out of the small town. She sees an ad about jobs for film actors. Meanwhile she goes on a camping trip with her friend Tomek, for whom she has strong feelings. The boy takes advantage of her and asks if she’d go to bed with his friend. The girl is shocked. When she gets home she finds she’s been asked to participate in a test film shoot in Warsaw. Paweł, an orphan, gets a similar invitation. He works in a community culture center in the country. He has a love affair with a much older married woman. Ania and Paweł become friends. During the test shoot Anka is asked to play any scene she wants – she plays back a conversation they had in the hotel. Paweł sees it as if she’s trying to sell herself whatever the cost – he rebels and runs away from the shoot.
