The Crew

(Załoga)

1957   >   drama/adventure

A typical socialist realism propaganda story about young sailors from various backgrounds coming of age. Thanks to good acting by amateur actors, a skillfully crafted plot and adventure movie elements the film gained viewer acclaim, even though this type of movie wasn’t usually well received.

One of the many post-war works of art by Jan Fethke, an experienced screenwriter and director, creator of the legendary “Zapomniana melodia”.

Their debut roles in “Załoga” led to successful careers for Tadeusz Janczar and Wojciech Siemion.

The movie was filmed in authentic locations thanks to the help of the Naval Ministry, the crew of the “Dar Pomorza” and students of the State Naval Schools.

Antek Bugaj, a boy from a wealthy family, is deemed one of the best students in the State Naval School. The bright but lazy and egotistical teen gets his excellent grades thanks to the unfair help from the navigation teacher Kapera and support from his buddy Józek. It’s not until he starts serving on the “Dar Pomorza” that he becomes aware he doesn’t have the necessary knowledge or skills. Antek hides his ignorance from his friends, who already think little of him. In secret he tries to catch up with his learning, but it’s too late – he sets the wrong course during training maneuvers.
