A love tragedy set against the backdrop of life in a Polish village. The picture also shows the mechanisms of implementing cooperatives and the significant role of religion in the folk’s life.

Staszek Stosina gets out of prison and comes back to his family village. While he was away, his girlfriend Ulka started dating a local teacher – Edek. Staszek doesn’t know what to do with his life, he is supported by his brother. He grows fond of the handicapped Bronka and persuades her father to give him the land he had given to the cooperative as her dowry. Finally, the father, wishing the best for his daughter, agrees. Unfortunately he makes the decision too late. Edek leaves the village and Ulka gets back to Staszek. Desperate Bronka stabs Staszek to death with a knife and her father takes the blame on himself.
