Tears Won't Help

(Szkoda twoich łez)

1985   >   musical/ melodrama

A partly musical film portraying the reality of interwar music halls, where people dream of fame, resort to more or less (un)ethical methods of getting attractive roles and have to make moral choices. Based on “Strachy” TV series, it features rich and spectacular production design, as well as magnificent dance scenes.

Teresa Sikorzanka is a music hall dancer. She dreams of big roles, fame and career. Teresa is in love with aging playboy Modecki, who quickly notices her and they have a short affair. While it means a great deal to Teresa, unfortunately Modecki is not interested in continuing their relationship. She writes him a letter in which she assures him of her great love for him. Teresa starts working in a countryside music hall together with her colleague Linka, but the show is a failure and she returns to Warsaw. She manages to get her way back into her old music hall. The dancer wins the affections of the wealthy Mietek Radziszewski. Meanwhile, Modecki returns from the countryside. He starts to woo Teresa, who breaks up with Mietek after a fit of jealousy. A new career opportunity opens up for her as one of the dancers has an accident, leaving her role up for grabs. On the opening night, she wins the hearts of the audience with her Spanish dance act. Later, Teresa goes to see a doctor and finds out she is pregnant by Modecki, which makes her quit the show.
