Matter to Be Settled

(Sprawa do załatwienia)

1953   >   slice of life/comedy

A light and ingenious comedy that combines pre-war charm and satirical humor with elements of socialist realism poetics. The main plot is but a pretext to present a series of sketches based on popular theatrical programs “To się pokaże” (We’ll Show) and “Objeżdżalnia społeczna” (Public Carousel) by Teatr Satyryków.

The film shows partially rebuilt Warsaw, interesting to contemporary viewers, and scenes portraying the beginnings of Polish television. Catchy songs performed by Julian Sztatler and Maria Koterbska are an additional bonus.

The film includes an amazing performance by legendary comedian Adolf Dymsza, who portrays a total of eight characters in the movie.

The lead female character takes a trip to Warsaw. The journey is a chance to present and highlight the titular “matters that need to be dealt with”: bothersome and often harmful social issues.

While visiting a local shoe factory, TV reporter Stefan commits to helping buy a new piano for the local band. Zosia, a beautiful girl and exemplary worker, is sent to Warsaw to pick up the instrument. Upon arrival, she discovers that Stefan did not keep his promise. The angry girl tries to find him, encountering numerous difficulties and obstacles. The embarrassed reporter, who comes to like Zosia very much, wants to make up, but he too comes to face many problems. Although all ends well, many “matters need to be dealt with”: bureaucracy, nepotism, fraud, dishonesty..
