Christmas Eve

(Przedświąteczny wieczór)

1966   >   psychological

A half-fantasy, dreamy story about human loneliness and searching for love.

On Christmas Eve Andrzej returns to an empty apartment. He calls different people in search of information about an imaginary Ewa. He is misled. The phone wasn’t working for a while and the owner of the apartment he was directed to is dead. At the next address he finds his friends from the war era, with whom he drinks and reminisces about old times. He then picks up a ringing phone and has a conversation with his doppelganger. He wants to go on a journey hoping he’ll finally meet Ewa. He starts fighting with his doppelganger on the train platform. He finally manages to get on the departing train.
