Farewells

(Pożegnania)

1958   >   psychological/ drama

A beautiful and visually significant picture and an adaptation of Stanislaw Dygat’s novel. A grotesque and ironic humor, smoothly intertwined with realism. A rebellion and desire to break the conventionalities are only a pose, a play with others.

Paweł is a boy from a wealthy family. Rebelling against the bourgeois lifestyle, he goes to a nightclub. He meets Lidka, a dancer disappointed with life, for whom the acquaintance is a chance to experience something new. Together they go out of town, but to Lidka’s dissatisfaction, their affair is purely platonic. Paweł explains that he only wants to get her out of the company which has a bad effect on her. The outbreak of the war and Paweł’s father’s intervention put a stop to their relationship. They meet after years, when Lidka is already married to Paweł’s cousin, Count Mirek. It turns out that despite all the time passed, their feelings for one another never wore off. Count Mirek runs away from the approaching front, while Lidka stays in Podkowa Leśna, near Warsaw.
