(Motyle)

1973   >   psychological drama/teen movie

A great piece of atmospheric filmmaking, the movie portrays teenagers with their dreams, problems and first crushes which are typical for adolescents, yet surprisingly mature and genuine.

A boy called Edek spends summer holidays at his aunt Hela’s.  Surrounded by woods and located at the lake, the place seems like a paradise for teenagers.  Weather is great and there are other kids his age to hang out with.  Worshipped by all the boys, Monika lives in a next door lodge in the summer resort. The girl is aware of her looks and the effect they have on the opposite sex. She lets the young admirers court her. Edek succumbs to her charm, too. He decides to get closer to the girl. They go for long walks and spend lots of time together. Monika reads him letters from her mother. The letters imply that Monika and her mother are soon to join the girl’s father who works abroad. Edek finds Monika more and more fascinating. He starts ignoring his mates and seizes every opportunity to be near the girl. One day, some tourists stop by next to the aunt Hela’s house. They look smart,  have fantastic camping gear and a car. Hugely impressed Monika becomes friends with the tourists’ son Alek.  The boy’s haughty manner and the fact that he competes for Monika’s attention make Edek angry. He does not wait long to provoke a fight during which Hela’s daughter Honorka tells him a secret. Monika is an orphan.  Abandoned by parents, she now lives in a dormitory. She wrote the letters herself.  The distraught girl runs away.
