"Polish hell", as exemplified by the story of a farmer-worker who becomes a millionaire after winning the lottery. People from his environment refuse to accept his sudden rise to wealth and his later actions only augment their hatred for him.

Józek Mikuła runs a small farm with his mother. He also makes a little money on the side as a driver in the nearby cement plant. One day, he wins the main prize in the lottery - one million złotys. The sensational news spreads fast. Józek invests some of the money in his farm. He also buys a color TV for the village club café. His sudden rise to wealth is not taken well by his neighbors. To make matters worse, his fiancé starts showing off his riches. A conflict starts brewing up. Józek's tractor is damaged, his hens and dogs are killed, dead birds are thrown into his house through the windows. Despite invitations, no one turns up at Józek and Zośka's wedding  ceremony. The hostility continues to intensify. Józek's barn is set on fire. The turning point is when his cows are chased into a swampy pond. Józek's mother suffers a heart attack trying to save them. Only then the neighbors show some solidarity and rush to rescue her.
