Fog

(Mgła)

1985   >   slice of life/drama

A drama attempting to analyse the experienced events and their subjective interpretations, which results in understatements and ambiguity.

Ewa and Alek are lovers on their way back from a guesthouse in the mountains to Warsaw. At the same time, Kim is released prison on parole. In his home, his discovers a stranger called Mietek. He forces him to drink alcohol to find out whether there was anything between him and Jola. Alek drives his car recklessly. Worked up by his argument with Ewa, he makes dangerous turns. The car drives into a fog. Suddenly, Alek has the feeling that he has hit someone. He steps on the brakes, almost causing the car to fall into a ravine. A quick overview of the vehicle does not reveal any sign of someone hitting the bonnet. Jola stands by the side of the road. She claims she heard a scream. Agitated, Ewa explains to her that it was she who was screaming. Alek checks the side of the road with his torch. He does not find anything, but decides to contact the police nonetheless. He goes to Jola's house, where he meets Kim and Mietek, who has been beaten up. Kim unplugs the phone. Irritated, Ewa returns to Warsaw by train. The police search the riverbank and the river. They only manage to fish out Kim's jacket and bag. Alek sits in the car. The fog hangs thick in the air.
