Men on the Island

(Mężczyźni na wyspie)

1962   >   psychological/ drama

Stunning and artful camerawork by DoP Kazimierz Wawrzyniak.

The film was shot in natural outdoor settings of Pajęcza Island in Śniardwy lake.

This psychological drama shows relationships among men who have very little in common, yet are stuck with each other.

Nine men, who are employed on a construction site threatened with flooding, arrive on a desert island. Their task is to cut down the reeds to be used for dam’s reinforcement. Cut off from the outside world, the men work in extreme conditions and are forced to overcome multiple obstacles. Rooted in the past, the conflict between a former teacher Michalski and a relegated engineer Sznajder comes to the fore. The tension escalates along with an accidental appearance of a beautiful woman whose presence unleashes reapers’ hidden desires and instincts.
