A rational assessment of heroism, attitudes and behavior of officers of the Polish Second Army during the 1945 offensive. The screenplay is based on a novel of the same title by Józef Hen.

In spring 1945, the Polish Second Army is preparing to cross the Eastern Neisse. A dispute breaks out between colonel Czapran and his deputy, ensign Szumibór. After getting slapped in the face by Czapran, the ensign reports the incident. The prosecutor, captain Hyrny, tries to save Czapran from facing the consequences of his behavior. He persuades Szumibór to withdraw his accusation. Soon, another incident is reported – private Anklewicz did not obey an order.  Once again, the prosecutor tries to defuse the conflict. Private Anklewicz and colonel Czapran are killed during an attack. Despite the great danger, the unit sets out to retrieve their bodies.
