I Am Against

(Jestem przeciw)

1985   >   psychological/slice of life/drama

The film highlights the problem of drug addiction and its tragic consequences by portraying a community of young drug addicts who make various choices in a bid to kick the habit.

A young girl Jola, who ran away from Monar’s rehab centre,  dies of a drug overdose. Another runaway Jacek returns to the centre. Doctor Krystyna violates the centre’s rules by letting him stay there for a night.  A runaway’s re-admission to the rehab centre must be approved by the centre’s manager Grzegorz in agreement with all residents. Grzegorz’s therapeutic methods are rather radical. Driven by fear that  Kasia may fall off the wagon once she is out of the centre, he cuts her hair in a bid to obstruct her departure. The issue of Jacek’s return to the centre will be discussed at a special meeting. A drug addict who stops treatment is considered a threat to others. The centre’s residents will not hear of Jacek’s re-admission, but Grzegorz and doctor Krystyna persuade them into having a discussion. What really matters is to find out what made the runaway come back. Reasons for his departure are irrelevant.  Jacek tells his story in detail. Grzegorz blames him for Jola’s death. In the final vote, the majority of residents are against Jacek’s re-admission. They fear for themselves as Jacek’s presence may jeopardize their chances of beating addiction.  Jacek leaves. Grzegorz finds him at the bus station and gives him an address of another rehab centre. It is all up to Jacek. If he stays in the other place for half a year, he may come back to the old rehab centre. Jacek chooses to break into a pharmacy.
