Danka grew up in an orphanage in Warsaw. She will be spending upcoming Christmas holidays with the Pietrzak family, who are strangers to her. They are the ones who invited her. At first she’s unwilling to help with preparations for the holiday festivities, though with time she starts lend a helping hand. She begins to trust the family, she’d also like to give them small gifts, though she doesn’t have any money. Desperate, she turns to shoplifting. A young man notices this and follows her, warning her of the consequences of stealing. Danka sticks to her plan – the stolen goods become happy Christmas presents. Zenek, the neighbor’s son turns up at the Christmas dinner – it was he who witnessed Danka stealing. He doesn’t tell on her, but Danka is terrified and runs away. Marian and Julek find her at the train station and take her home where she stays for the rest of the winter holidays. Danka returns to Warsaw but stays in touch with the Pietrzak family. Marian likes her very much. Danka manages to conquer her distrust and meets him at the train station.
