1980   >   psychological/ drama

An interesting take on the notion of extrasensory perception of the reality; for contrast effect, the film is set in an academic environment - the bastion of reason and rational thinking.

Ewa works as an assistant at the chemistry department. She has long been haunted by a peculiar sound coming from the inside which only she can hear. Every such instance leads to a nervous attack and a blackout. Eventually, Ewa ends up in a psychiatric hospital. The tests do not reveal any physical signs of an illness and she is diagnosed with acute exhaustion. Meanwhile, Marek, a doctoral student at the electronics department, abandons the subject of his thesis after deciding it to be insignificant. He replies to an ad published in the newspaper by Ewa. She is looking for an electronics engineer who could find an explanation for the voices she is hearing. Marek suspects that it may be an alien civilisation's attempt at making contact, with Ewa acting as an intermediary. They conduct a series of experiments, but do not arrive at an explanation. Zosia removes a quartz crystal from Ewa's tooth; the object probably served as a radio receiver activated by electromagnetic waves. Ewa does not tell Marek about it so that she can stay close to him. However, Marek finds out the truth and kicks the woman out of his flat. Looking for mental stability, Ewa marries one of her students. Shortly afterwards, she learns that Marek is undergoing treatment in a closed institution. It turns out that he is now receiving the signals. Together, they decide to return to their experiments.
