The film is an adaptation of Jerzy Przeździecki’s novel “Kres”.
Summer of 1944 in the Sądeckie region. Home Army troops under the command of Major “Dziadek” were decimated during their attempt to intercept an airdrop from the Allied Forces. The survivors head for a ruined castle where the last ammo box was most likely dropped. Upon their arrival, they meet a group of soldiers under Soviet Major Alosha. A fanatical anti-communist, "Dziadek" rejects the proposal of cooperation, but Polish privates hit it off with the Russians. During the night, Alosha’s soldiers try to break through the German siege ring. “Dziadek” intends to take advantage of the situation and make an escape once the Germans and Russians have killed each other. However, the soldiers oppose these plans by renouncing obedience to his command and deciding to help their Russian comrades.
