Wolves' Echoes

(Wilcze echa)

1968   >   adventure, action

The most popular and successful Polish „easter” movie – a film based on the western film convention, though the plot takes places in Poland. A typical western plot is but a pretext for a dynamic adventure full of chases, fights and shoot-outs, set in the wild scenery of the Bieszczady mountains.

Authentic police protocols were used as a basis for the film script.

The lead role was portrayed by the Estonian actor and singer Bruno O’Ya who was dubbed by Bogusz Bilewski due to linguistic problems.

The western style is emphasized not only by beautiful landscapes of Polish mountain ranges, but also a well-tailored country-style score by Wojciech Kilar.

A retired soldier hast to single-handedly take on a group of bandits who are terrorizing a small town.

The year is 1948. Ensign Słotwina, a veteran who fought against the UPA army, is discharged for recurring insubordination. The man sets out to Derenica, where his friend Władeczek should be the MO commander. Along the way he fends off an attacks of fake militiamen. Upon arrival Słotwina discovers Władeczek and his men disappeared in mysterious circumstances and a self-appointed police chief, who is in fact a gang leader, has taken control of the area. The villains are looking for treasure hidden by the vanquished UPA unit. Słotwina decides to deal with the bandits. He is joined by the beautiful Tekla and Witold Szczytko, the only man among Władeczek’s men who survived.
